Mauritius – Import and Export

Import to Mauritius:

Beside the usual prohibition list (explosives, drugs, etc.) we would like to refer here to some specials of the Foreign Office: Mentioned on the web site of the Foreign Office Mauritius – special customs regulations: The import of plants and food is forbidden. Living animals must be put for a duration of at least 6 months in quarantine. Subject of the daily need can be imported. The import of weapons and drugs of all kinds – included cigarette paper – is strictly forbidden. Since also for some pharmaceutical products like e.g. certain pain killers an import ban exists, we advise to bring along a medical prescription that justifies the possession of the medicines (in the original box!). In addition it is prohibited to import equipment to harpoon fishing. Foreign currency can to an unlimited height may be imported, it must however be defined.

Export from Mauritius:

Here we would like to make a small difference: Exporting from Mauritius you can do a lot. But that does not mean that you are allowed to import this into the European Union. A good example for this are the numerously offered shells and corals. Also such beautiful souvenirs (with the most beautiful certificates that states that the export is legal) can cause problems at the European customs on arrival. Hint: leave the things where they belong to! Also here the hint of the Foreign Office: Caution with exotic souvenirs, these may be subject to strict import regulations. Please get informed already before the start of your journey, which souvenirs for reasons of the protection of the species may not be introduced. Unfortunatly a high number of tourists experienced a bad surprise with their return, if the souvenir is seized by the customs or even worst: getting a ticket afterwards. Even if an exotic souvenir impresses still so much by its characteristic and singularness – many animal and plant types, of which such souvenirs are made, are endangered or even extinct threatened in their existence. These souvenirs are subject to strict import regulations. Please do not contribute to the illegal and harmful trade with wildly living animals and plants. Nature protection organizations as well as environmental and customs authorities adivise not to bring souvenirs of risk which were manufactured from animals or plants. Instead they recommend national and typical textiles, ceramic or to acquire metal and glass work or paintings. Thus you do not cause damage to the animal and plant wild life in your holiday country.
