Drafting Building Structures – a Primer

If you look at your typical Chinese metropolis, you will see scores, perhaps hundreds, of cranes setting up tall buildings. The fundamental factor in the development of such edifices is steel. Such structures are the mainstay of each urban center.

Before the cranes can get into action, it has to be drafted. And this is where steel structure detailing has its introduction. Structural detailing design is essential to the safety of those who live in and around a building, and indeed the safety of the people actually erecting the building. A great amount of planning is mandatory in order to gratify safety ordinances while meeting all the specs the client and architect have ordered.

A steel detailing designer must know about pressure and force – getting the structure to yield to outside forces, and when to resist such pressures, to maximize the integrity of the structure. A building must also resist great weights, so this is another issue the detailer must consider. From snow weight to wind speed, a steel structure detailer has to take into account all kinds of outside pressures.

These days, there’s a greater demand for creative building designs, meaning the detailer can frequently find himself working on challenging designs and attempt to translate them into a secure living space for thousands of individuals.

However, it’s not all tough for the detailer – software packages like AutoCad, Asteel and Tekla Steel have helped speed up the operation of drafting and detailing buildings.
