Roman Blinds

Roman shades offer a lot, both as a window treatment and as a canvas for creativity. Roman shades are made of layers of fabric that fold as they are pulled up with a system of pulleys; the fabric lies flat when they are lowered. One common material for this type of shade is bamboo, but a little ingenuity can make these personal and unique.

The easiest way to personalize this window treatment is through adding trim to purchased Roman blinds. Beads may be added as “dangles” from the top or bottom edges, or fringe trim may be glued or sewn to those edges, as well. Ribbons may be added along the entire shade in all different kinds of patterns.

Those with a little more daring can make their own Roman shades, picking special fabrics to coordinate more completely with furnishings. Even better, a blank piece of fabric can be painted or appliquéd with personalized designs–even portraits– to make one-of-a-kind window treatment that friends will rave over. This is especially fun for nurseries and children’s rooms. Use themed patterns from coloring books, bright fabrics, and fusible interfacing; sequins, embroidery, or fabric markers can add details and personality to a child’s room, at minimal expense.

Even children can get in on things. Give them a blank Roman shade and markers, and let them design their own decorations. Spread newspapers and pass out the flue and glitter, too!

Again, Roman shades provide so many optionsleft simple, they provide a sophisticated, tailored style. Used as a beginning canvas, they open the world for personal expression.
