Every Hand Is a New Hand

I was at a casino a few months back, and I happened to sit the right of a very friendly lady. She was obviously a regular, since the dealers and other online poker players knew her by name, and I could tell she played good poker online. She had good judgment, played good starting hands, and bet wisely, but it just didn’t seem to be going well. While I was at the table, she experienced several bad beats, each separated by a streak of pre-flop folds. Although she kept her attitude pleasant, she started talking about changing seats. Eventually she got up and made her way to an empty seat to my right, essentially switching places with me, and putting me into what she figured was the unlucky seat.

I got a royal flush in the very next hand. I not only won the online poker pot, but the casino paid out sizeable bounty for getting the hand. If she hadn’t moved seats, that would have been her royal flush. The lesson-the past hands have no bearing on the next hand. Every hand that you’re dealt is a random pair of shuffled cards, and your odds of winning are the same every time you’re dealt a hand.
